The Phoenix hospitality industry breathed a sigh of relief on May 13 when Bud Selig, the Major League Baseball Commissioner, announced that the baseball All-Star game would remain in Arizona in 2011.   With the dead economy, unemployment sneaking closer to 10%, and threats of boycotts, Phoenix could not afford to lose such a high-visibility event.  For the immediate future, the city will be counting on the Phoenix Suns to provide needed economic and psychological relief to the Phoenix metropolitan area.

While season ticket and general game sales may suffer as economies flounder, major sports events are usually recession-resistant (e.g., Super Bowls and World Series are still sold out).  Last year, the Downtown Phoenix Partnership estimated that the National Basketball All-Star game would add $100 million to Arizona’s sagging economy.

Google has a new feature for small businesses in five U.S. cities, with future plans to expand it to ten, and eventually rolling it out nationwide. Google “Tags.”

Currently businesses in San Jose, Houston, Austin, Atlanta, and Washington D.C. (next up are Chicago, San Diego, Seattle, Boulder, and San Francisco) can pay to plant flags using a product called “Tags,” creating ads that are easy for anyone to use, be it the smallest of small businesses, or small advertising and marketing groups that assist small businesses.

The cost to the business to create a yellow box that appears alongside a business listing on Google Maps and search results, as well as beneath the business’ listing next to the map is $300 per year. Unfortunately it appears your businesses gets what it pays for with this program. Marke
